Indiana Tragedy: House Cleaner Fatally Shot at Wrong Address

A tragic incident occurred in an Indiana subdivision, where a house cleaner was fatally shot after mistakenly arriving at the wrong address. The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a potential break-in at around 6:49 a.m. on Wednesday.

Details of the Shooting Incident

Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman on the front porch. Unfortunately, the woman, Maria Florinda Rios Perez, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, identified as her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, was unharmed.

Investigators determined that the couple were part of a cleaning crew that had unintentionally approached the incorrect residence. Authorities clarified that they did not enter the home.

According to Velazquez, the shot that struck Perez originated from inside the house, penetrating through the door. A visible bullet hole was later confirmed at the location.

Investigation Underway

The police have not disclosed the identity of anyone inside the home during the shooting. Velazquez expressed his frustration, stating, “They should’ve called the police first instead of just shooting out of nowhere.”

The Whitestown Police are conducting a thorough investigation, interviewing all individuals involved, and have recovered a firearm. They are collaborating with the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure the investigation is handled meticulously.

Public Response and Similar Incidents

The department urged the public to remain patient during the investigation process. They emphasized the importance of withholding unverified information to prevent misinformation. “We understand that incidents like this can cause concern and speculation,” the department stated.

Sadly, this incident echoes similar tragedies in recent history. Notably, in April 2023, a 20-year-old woman was shot for mistakenly entering the wrong driveway in New York. That same month, a domestic violence call in New Mexico resulted in fatal consequences when police shot an unarmed man after he answered the door. Additionally, in Kansas City, a teenager named Ralph Yarl was shot after mistakenly knocking on the wrong door; he survived the incident.

  • Victim’s Name: Maria Florinda Rios Perez
  • Relationship: Mother of four, wife of Mauricio Velazquez
  • Time of Incident: 6:49 a.m.
  • Location: Indiana subdivision

The community is left questioning how such a tragic event could occur and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
