Buffalo Grove Installs ‘Bed Shaker’ Alarms for Deaf, Hard of Hearing Residents

A new initiative is enhancing fire safety for deaf and hard of hearing residents in Buffalo Grove. The local fire department has begun installing “bed shaker alarms” in several homes throughout the north suburban area.

Bed Shaker Alarms: A Life-Saving Innovation

Recently, a bed shaker alarm was installed in a Buffalo Grove residence to alert a child in case of fire. These alarms are specifically designed for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, providing an essential safety mechanism during emergencies.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

Buffalo Grove Fire Chief Larry Kane praised this initiative as a prime example of community engagement making a difference. The project began when officials connected with Camp I Am Me after a mother’s inquiry for assistance.

The mother expressed concern about her 4-year-old son, who was reluctant to wear his hearing aids while sleeping. She worried it would hinder his ability to respond to emergencies.

Collaborative Efforts

  • Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s “Be Alarmed!” program facilitated the collaboration.
  • Multiple departments teamed up to implement the bed shaker alarm installations.

This innovative approach highlights how community resources can effectively address safety challenges for children needing additional support in emergency situations.
