Olivia Rodrigo Criticizes ICE for Using Song as ‘Racist Propaganda’

Pop singer Olivia Rodrigo has publicly criticized the Trump administration for misusing her music to endorse its immigration policies. Her dissatisfaction centers around a video posted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that featured her song “All-American Bitch.”

ICE’s Use of Olivia Rodrigo’s Music

The DHS shared a video on Instagram showcasing a mix of chaotic visuals of ICE agents detaining undocumented immigrants. This was accompanied by the song’s more vibrant rock segment. Meanwhile, the softer part of the song played over footage that depicted individuals appearing to self-deport, introduced with the caption, “If ICE finds you.”

DHS Post and Rodrigo’s Reaction

The post included a directive urging individuals to “LEAVE NOW and self-deport using the CBP Home app,” warning of consequences for non-compliance. In a now-deleted response, Rodrigo expressed her discontent, stating, “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” Her fans have since shared her message widely, reiterating her stance.

Official DHS Response

In reaction to inquiries from Rolling Stone, a spokesperson for DHS stated, “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms. Rodrigo thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.”

Rodrigo’s Advocacy for Immigrant Rights

Rodrigo has been vocal against the policies of the previous administration, especially regarding immigration issues. In June, during mass raids targeting undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles, she voiced her concerns on social media.

  • Rodrigo criticized the violence of deportations in her community.
  • She emphasized the importance of immigrants to Los Angeles and American society.
  • Her stance highlights the need for respect, empathy, and due process.

Rodrigo stated, “I stand with the beautiful, diverse community of Los Angeles and with immigrants all across America. I stand for our right to freedom of speech and freedom to protest.” As the situation develops, her representative has not yet provided further comment.
