Veterans Day Events May Disrupt Weekend Traffic on Bay Bridge

Motorists should prepare for significant traffic delays this weekend on the Bay Bridge due to various events, including the Bay Bridge Run and Baltimore’s Veterans Day Parade.

Traffic Disruptions on the Bay Bridge

This Sunday, the eastbound lane of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge will close from 12:01 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Maryland Transportation Authority has announced that the closure is necessary to facilitate the Bay Bridge Run, which includes a 10K race crossing the bridge and extending into Kent Island.

To minimize congestion, two-way traffic will operate on the westbound side. The center lane may open intermittently.

Road Closures and Detours

Additional road closures and detours are expected on the Eastern Shore throughout the race. The following changes will be in effect:

  • The off-ramp from eastbound U.S. 50 to MD 8 will be closed. Motorists will be redirected to the next exit at Thompson Creek Road.
  • The on-ramp from MD 8 to westbound U.S. 50 will also be closed. Drivers will need to take MD 18 and access U.S. 50 via the roundabout at Castle Marina Road.
  • Residents wanting to access U.S. 50 westbound should approach the highway from Duke Street or Castle Marina Road.

Officials suggest traveling before 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid heavy delays in the area.

Veterans Day Parade Impacts Traffic in Baltimore

In Baltimore, the Veterans Day Parade will add to the traffic congestion on Saturday. The parade, which begins at noon in the Mount Vernon neighborhood, will proceed from the Washington Monument to War Memorial Plaza, concluding around 2:30 p.m.

Street closures and parking restrictions will begin at 9 a.m., including:

  • Mount Vernon Place from Cathedral to Saint Paul Streets
  • Charles Street from Lombard to Madison Streets
  • Centre Street from Park Avenue to Saint Paul Street
  • Lexington Street from Charles to Saint Paul Streets
  • Holliday Street from Saratoga to Lexington Streets

Additional events in Baltimore may further compound traffic issues. These include the opening of the Inner Harbor Ice Rink and the Maryland Film Festival, which runs all weekend at the SNF Parkway Theatre.

Other Veterans Day Celebrations

Several other events are scheduled across Maryland for Veterans Day. One such event is the Howard County Veterans Day Parade & Celebration on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. This parade will take place near the shopping mall in Columbia, adding to the traffic in the area.

Drivers are strongly advised to use alternate routes and be mindful of changing traffic patterns throughout the weekend.
