Boulevard Bridge Celebrates 100 Years with Commemorative Plaque Unveiling

Richmond’s Boulevard Bridge marked its centennial celebration with a community event that included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. This iconic structure, known colloquially as “The Nickel Bridge,” has been a vital connection between the northside and southside of the city since its opening in 1925.

To commemorate this milestone, the city temporarily closed the bridge to host festivities. Hundreds gathered to enjoy food, live music, and breathtaking views of the James River. The celebration not only honored the bridge’s history but also highlighted its importance in the community.

Significance of the Celebration

Cal Whitehead, a representative of the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association, reflected on the significance of the bridge. He stated, “For a bridge to be still standing 100 years later and people run it, bike it, drive it every day, it’s a good symbol for the city.”

  • Established: 1925
  • Years in Service: 100 years
  • Weeks in Service: Approximately 5,200 weeks
  • Days in Service: More than 36,000 days

The festivities were organized by the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association and the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA). The event transformed the bridge into a lively hub for the community, reinforcing its role as a cherished landmark.

Unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque

The ceremony culminated in the unveiling of the Boulevard Bridge Centennial Plaque. Richmond City Council Member Sarah Abubaker emphasized how significant the plaque is, stating, “We’re just so lucky to have it and now to have this commemorative plaque and be able to share that history with people.”

Preservation for the Future

Joi Taylor Dean, CEO of the RMTA, affirmed the ongoing commitment to the bridge’s maintenance. “We intend to continue ensuring that this bridge is safe for all of those — our patrons who run across it, walk across it, bicycle across it, and drive across it for many years to come,” she stated. This dedication aims to preserve the Boulevard Bridge for future generations.

The bridge’s nickname, “The Nickel Bridge,” harkens back to its past when the toll was just five cents. Whitehead noted that while tolls have increased, the nickname remains a beloved part of Richmond’s identity.

As the Boulevard Bridge steps into its next century, it continues to serve as an essential link in Richmond, embodying history, community, and resilience.
