Mike Tomlin Criticizes Team’s Performance in Loss

Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, expressed his dissatisfaction following the team’s 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. This defeat highlighted several offensive shortcomings, particularly regarding third-down conversions.

Key Performance Issues in the Loss

During the press conference post-game, Tomlin did not hold back his frustration. “We stunk it up tonight,” he commented, pinpointing the team’s struggle to convert third downs as a critical factor in the defeat.

Third Down Struggles

  • Pittsburgh started the game 0-for-9 on third downs.
  • They finished at 2-for-11 after a late fourth-quarter touchdown drive.

“You’re not going to win football games not converting third downs and losing the turnover battle,” Tomlin stated. He acknowledged that the team had moments of carelessness, contributing to their loss.

Quarterback Performance

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had a difficult outing, completing just 16 of 31 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. When asked to evaluate Rodgers’ performance, Tomlin’s response was curt: “How would you?”

After being questioned about potentially increasing the ground game usage, Tomlin emphasized the team’s inability to sustain drives. Jaylen Warren ran for 70 yards on 14 carries, but Tomlin noted, “If you’re 0-for-9 or 10 on third down, you’re not going to have enough snaps.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, the Steelers hold a record of 5-4 and remain at the top of the AFC North. Tomlin remains confident in his team’s potential. “I’m not lacking confidence. I don’t need a pat on the back. We’ll be back,” he asserted.

What fuels his confidence? “Fifty-three years of life,” Tomlin explained, “in particular in this business.” The Steelers will face the Cincinnati Bengals in a rematch next Sunday, marking a crucial moment in their season.
