Giants Appoint Mike Kafka as Interim Head Coach After Brian Daboll’s Departure

The New York Giants have officially appointed Mike Kafka as the interim head coach following the dismissal of Brian Daboll. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the franchise, which has faced a series of disappointing seasons.

Changes in Giants Coaching Staff

In a joint statement, team president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch outlined the reasons for making this change. They expressed their commitment to enhancing the team’s performance, acknowledging the frustrations of their fanbase.

  • Brian Daboll relieved of head coach duties.
  • Mike Kafka steps in as interim head coach.
  • Joe Schoen remains general manager, tasked with finding a permanent replacement.

Coaching Performance and Expectations

Under Daboll’s leadership, the Giants achieved a record of 20 wins, 40 losses, and one tie over four seasons. Despite being named the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year, Daboll’s tenure will be remembered for unmet expectations. The Giants recorded nine wins in his first season, securing their first playoff spot in six years and their first postseason victory in over a decade.

Now, Kafka faces the challenge of revitalizing a team that has struggled to meet its goals. His experience as an offensive coordinator since 2022, and his earlier tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs, positions him to steer the Giants in a new direction.

Mike Kafka’s Background

Kafka joined the Giants as offensive coordinator and later became assistant head coach. Prior to his move to New York, he was with the Kansas City Chiefs for five years, where he contributed to their Super Bowl LIV victory.

  • Previous positions at Kansas City:
  • Offensive quality control coach (2017)
  • Quarterbacks coach (2018-2019)
  • Passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2020-2021)

He began coaching at Northwestern University, where he also set several passing records during his playing career. Kafka, a Chicago native and St. Rita High School graduate, holds a degree in communication studies from Northwestern University. He resides with his wife, Alli, and their three children—Ashton, Jackson, and Camden.

Looking Ahead

The Giants now look toward the future under Kafka’s leadership. As the team aims to rebuild, both Mara and Tisch emphasize the importance of improving the franchise’s performance to meet the expectations of their dedicated fans.
