A significant section of Interstate 75 was closed for several hours due to multiple weather-related accidents. The incidents occurred near the Kentucky-Tennessee border late Monday morning, as reported by Kentucky State Police.
I-75 Northbound Closed Due to Crashes
Heavy snowfall created hazardous conditions, prompting the closure of the northbound lanes. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet confirmed that a series of accidents happened in a short time span, leading to a traffic jam.
Challenges in Clearing the Roadway
Emergency management officials reported that the nature of the vehicles involved complicated the cleanup process. Many of the crashes involved large trucks, including tractor-trailers and a gravel-laden trailer, making it difficult to clear the scene.
- Time Frame: Closed late Monday morning, reopened around 2:30 PM.
- Location: I-75 Northbound at mile point 1.8, near a bridge.
- Cause: Rapid snowfall leading to icy conditions on the roadway.
Jerry Rains, the emergency management director for Laurel and Whitley Counties, emphasized the difficulties crews faced in clearing the roadway. Many of the crashes occurred close to a bridge, which likely froze over before the main highway.
Motorists are urged to remain cautious during winter weather as conditions can change rapidly. The reopening of I-75 allows traffic to resume, yet drivers should stay informed about possible future weather impacts.
