NBA Unveils Revamped All-Star Game Format and Selection Process

The NBA has announced significant changes to the All-Star Game format, introducing a fresh approach for the upcoming season. This new format features teams representing the United States and the rest of the world. The restructured event is geared towards enhancing fan engagement and rejuvenating the competitive spirit of the game.

NBA All-Star Game 2026 Format Changes

The revamped format introduces a unique three-team structure, featuring eight-player rosters. Among these, two teams will represent American players, while the third will consist of international players. The selection process for players has also been modified, eliminating previous positional requirements.

Player Selection Process

  • Five starters and seven reserves from each conference.
  • Selection remains based on fan, media, and player votes for starters.
  • Coaches will choose the reserves.
  • No positional restrictions; starters will be the top five vote-getters.
  • Reserves will come from the top seven vote-getters, irrespective of position.

In circumstances where the selected player pool does not fit the 16 American to 8 international ratio, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will appoint additional players to balance the teams.

Game Timing and Format

This year’s All-Star Game will feature a new schedule. Instead of the traditional 8 p.m. ET start, the game will commence at 5 p.m. ET, right after a Team USA hockey game. The format will also diverge from the norm, with four 12-minute quarters featuring round-robin play among the three teams. Each team will compete twice, and the two strongest teams based on records will progress to the championship round.

Event Details

  • Location: Intuit Dome, Los Angeles.
  • Date: All-Star Weekend starts on February 13, 2026.
  • Broadcasting: The event marks a transition to NBC, moving from TNT.

The NBA’s initiative aims to reinvigorate the All-Star Game and draw more participation from players. The innovative changes to the format and the integration with NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage may attract broader viewership and a renewed interest in the All-Star festivities.
