Alan Cumming Attracts Stars to Pitlochry as a Modern Pied Piper
Alan Cumming, the acclaimed Scottish actor and television presenter, has taken on the role of a modern Pied Piper, attracting notable figures to Pitlochry. His vision aims to elevate the small Perthshire town’s theatre to international recognition. Cumming expresses that it wasn’t difficult to invite talent to this picturesque Highlands setting.
Star-Studded Lineup for Pitlochry Theatre
Among those joining Cumming is Sir Ian McKellen. The legendary actor plans to perform in January 2024 as part of the Out in the Hills Festival. He will feature in a rehearsed reading of Equinox, a new one-man play by Laurie Slade.
Other notable performers include:
- Armistead Maupin
- Evelyn Glennie
- Graham Norton
Norton, a well-known television host and actor, recalls that he tried to secure a role at Pitlochry’s theatre shortly after graduating drama school but was unsuccessful. The anticipation of returning to the town has reignited his passion for the stage.
Revamping the Theatre Experience
Cumming, who grew up in Aberfeldy, aims to honor the legacy of John Stewart, the theatre’s founder. Stewart envisioned a space for artistic expression after visiting the area in 1944. His vision faced challenges, initially resulting in a tented venue due to material shortages.
Under Cumming’s leadership, the traditional repertory system is being replaced, allowing for more flexible performances. He emphasizes that this change will foster creativity and enable better works to be produced and showcased.
Upcoming Productions
In addition to Equinox, this season will feature three musical performances, including:
- The Scottish premiere of Once, based on the popular film about musicians in Dublin.
- A new rendition of My Fair Lady, where Cumming will take on the role of Henry Higgins.
- A production titled The History of Paper, featuring Shirley Henderson, which will later be staged in New York.
These selections illustrate Cumming’s intent to blend new works with beloved classics, aiming to attract diverse audiences and artists to the theatre.
Theatre as a Destination
Cumming’s goal is to transform the Pitlochry Festival Theatre into an international hub for theatre lovers. He is enthusiastic about welcoming both longtime supporters and newcomers.
With plans extending to 2027, Cumming has a creative vision for the theatre that promises many exciting projects on the horizon. For now, the focus is on attracting audiences to experience the vibrant cultural offerings in the scenic Highlands through a thrilling and memorable theatre season.
