BYU Drops Two Redshirt Players from Depth Chart
Brigham Young University (BYU) is adjusting its player redshirt strategy this season. Two players, defensive tackle Justin Kirkland and linebacker Ephraim Asiata, have been removed from the depth chart and are expected to redshirt. This decision comes from the team’s defensive coordinator, Jay Hill, who aims to preserve their eligibility for future seasons.
Justin Kirkland: Preserving Eligibility
Justin Kirkland, a transfer from Oklahoma State, has faced challenges this year, including a knee injury during Fall Camp. He returned to play in games against Colorado and Utah but has not participated since. According to Hill, the decision to redshirt Kirkland allows him to keep his eligibility for next season.
Impact on Defensive Line
The interior defensive line’s performance has been steady, thanks to players like John Taumoepeau and Keanu Tanuvasa. Taumoepeau is graduating after this season, which makes Kirkland’s return significant for the team’s future. Tanuvasa also has the option to return in 2026, adding further uncertainty to the lineup.
Ephraim Asiata: Injuries Affecting Playtime
Ephraim Asiata has also been sidelined due to a hand injury sustained after appearing in three games. He was initially expected to contribute as an edge linebacker. Hill confirmed that Asiata is another candidate to redshirt this season.
Other Potential Redshirt Candidates
- Tommy Prassas: Played four games but is currently out with an injury.
- Jonathan Kabeya: Participated in two games but could save a year of eligibility by sitting out the UCF game.
Both Kirkland and Kabeya still have the opportunity to play in postseason games without jeopardizing their redshirt status. This flexibility could benefit BYU as they navigate the remainder of the season.
