Federal Workers to Begin Receiving Back Pay Soon

The recent government shutdown has officially ended, allowing federal workers to begin receiving back pay soon. After 43 days, the longest shutdown in American history concluded when President Donald Trump signed legislation to reopen the government. Now, federal employees can expect significant paychecks to compensate for the period of lost wages.

Back Pay Timeline for Federal Workers

The White House has issued a detailed projection of when different federal agencies will begin disbursing back pay. It is important for employees to understand that payments will not be distributed simultaneously.

Expected Payment Dates

  • Saturday, November 15: Employees at the General Services Administration and the Office of Personnel Management will receive back pay for October.
  • Sunday, November 16: Workers at the Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Veterans Affairs, and civilian employees at the Department of War will get their payments for October.
  • Monday, November 17: Employees from the Department of Education, Department of State, Department of the Interior, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Social Security Administration will also be compensated for October.
  • Wednesday, November 19: Employees at the Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Justice, Department of Labor, Department of the Treasury, and Small Business Administration will receive back pay covering the period from October 1 to November 15.

Details About Payment Discrepancies

Some federal agencies will initially provide back pay only for the month of October. Others will issue paychecks covering the entire shutdown period. These discrepancies arise from variations in payroll schedules and providers among federal agencies.

Federal workers can anticipate that their first payments will start arriving as soon as this Saturday, continuing through November 19. This timing allows for appropriate compensation as federal employees return to work. The administration hopes that these “superchecks” will relieve financial pressures caused by the shutdown.
