Bundee Aki Aims for New Heights at 35 in Ireland-Australia Clash

Bundee Aki, a 35-year-old centre for Ireland, aims to elevate his performance as he prepares for the upcoming clash against Australia. Despite his experience, Aki admits his form has not met his own expectations. After starting in two British and Irish Lions Tests against Australia last summer, he recently found himself as a substitute in the match against New Zealand.

Aiming for Improvement

Aki expressed a strong desire to return to the form that earned him a nomination for the World Rugby Player of the Year in 2023. “I’m probably not at the point where I want to be,” he noted. “You just have to adapt and go with it.” He acknowledged the intense competition within the Irish squad, which includes talented players like Robbie Henshaw, Garry Ringrose, and Stuart McCloskey.

Healthy Competition

  • Tom Farrell

Aki believes that the quality and performance of his teammates propel the entire group forward. “You saw Stu play very well in the New Zealand game, and then Robbie and Tom in the Japan game,” Aki stated. “The guys are putting their hands up. Once you get your chance, you’ve got to take it with both hands.”

Aging Gracefully

As Aki looks ahead, he is not deterred by the prospect of turning 37 by the time of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. He remarked on the understanding that coaches have regarding the physical demands on players. “That’s why our strength and conditioning coaches and nutritionists are there,” he said. “We have to ensure we’re ready physically and mentally.”

The World Cup Cycle

Reflecting on Ireland’s current status midway through the World Cup cycle, Aki conveyed optimism. “We’re building nicely and learning on the go,” he commented. “There’s a transition period, but guys are finding their feet and starting to play how they want.” His sentiments suggest confidence in the team’s progress leading up to pivotal matches.
