RCPE Railroad Upgrade Nears Finish, Boosting Speed and Safety for South Dakota Businesses
The Rapid City, Pierre, and Eastern Railroad (RCPE) is nearing the end of an extensive upgrade project. This initiative enhances the main line connecting Fort Pierre to Rapid City. As a result, RCPE will soon implement a planned increase in train speeds.
Significant Upgrades to Railroad Infrastructure
The $84 million investment in this project has garnered support from several sources. Notably, the U.S. Department of Transportation provided a substantial grant, supplemented by funds from the State of South Dakota and RCPE itself. These improvements will bolster transportation and logistics services for local West River businesses.
Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
The upgrades will enable trains to operate at speeds ranging from 25 mph to 40 mph. According to RCPE’s general manager, Ryan Englebright, this advancement will lead to safer and more efficient rail service.
- 88 miles of rail have been replaced with continuously welded rail.
- More than 80,000 new crossties have been installed.
RCPE emphasizes the importance of safety around railroad tracks. The public is advised to exercise caution at grade crossings and adhere to all warning signs and signals.
Looking Ahead
This multi-year project represents a significant commitment to enhancing rail transport in South Dakota. The community can expect improved service from the RCPE as the upgrades approach completion.
