Honoring Trans Lives Lost to Violence and Suicide in Past Year
On November 20, communities worldwide will observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance, honoring trans lives lost to violence and suicide over the past year. This year’s memorial takes on special significance as LGBTQ individuals face increasing hostility and discrimination.
The Reality of Violence Against Trans People
According to Advocates for Trans Equality, at least 27 trans and nonbinary individuals have been killed since November. This number is likely an undercount, as gathering accurate statistics remains a challenge. Trans individuals experience violent crime at rates more than four times higher than their cisgender counterparts.
Impact on Mental Health
The Trevor Project highlights that trans youth face an elevated risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts due to stigma and lack of support. Advocacy director Bahari Thomas emphasized the invisibility that many trans individuals feel in society.
