Indiana RB Falls Short of Derrick Henry’s High School Rushing Record
In an intense high school football matchup, Myles McLaughlin of Knox High fell short of breaking Derrick Henry’s long-standing national rushing record. The game against Fort Wayne Bishop Luers took place on a rainy November night. McLaughlin needed 364 yards to eclipse Henry’s impressive total of 12,124 yards, but ultimately managed only 78 yards in a disappointing 35-0 defeat.
Myles McLaughlin’s High School Career
This season, McLaughlin showcased remarkable talent, averaging 367 rushing yards per game. In the semifinal game, he struggled against Bishop Luers’ defense and finished with his lowest output of the season. His performance included a longest carry of just 11 yards.
Before the game, McLaughlin had accumulated a total of 4,768 rushing yards this season alone, setting the Indiana state record. Over his high school career, his stats break down as follows:
- Freshman year: 1,579 yards
- Sophomore year: 2,584 yards
- Junior year: 2,830 yards
Record-Breaking Touchdowns
Just a week prior, McLaughlin made headlines by setting both Indiana and national records for the most touchdowns in a season, surpassing the previous high of 68. In that game against Angola, he rushed for 372 yards and scored four touchdowns, bringing his career total to 11,761 yards.
Coaching Praise
Coach Russ Radtke spoke highly of McLaughlin, emphasizing his intense work ethic and leadership skills. Radtke noted, “His competitiveness drives him to elevate not only his own performance but also the standard for everyone around him.”
He praised McLaughlin’s football IQ, saying it allows him to read defenses and anticipate plays effectively. “He’s not just playing the game; he’s thinking it through at every level,” Radtke said.
Future Plans
Beyond football, McLaughlin is an accomplished athlete in both basketball and baseball. He plans to pursue a degree in special education, although he has yet to choose a college. He has received offers from several institutions, including Division I schools such as Ball State, Valparaiso, and Murray State.
Outside of athletics, McLaughlin dedicates time mentoring children with special needs. “He is always looking to lend a helping hand,” Radtke remarked.
Derrick Henry Responds
Prior to McLaughlin’s attempt to break his record, Derrick Henry expressed admiration for the young athlete. “Records are meant to be broken. I’m happy for his success,” Henry stated. He also shared advice for McLaughlin, encouraging him to focus on enjoying the game while leading his team.
While McLaughlin did not break Derrick Henry’s high school rushing record, his impressive achievements and contributions both on and off the field set a high standard for future athletes. His legacy at Knox High will undoubtedly inspire many to come.
