Scotland Experiences UK’s Coldest November Temperature in 15 Years

Scotland has experienced its coldest November temperatures in 15 years. The notable low of -12.6°C was recorded in Tomintoul, Moray. This temperature is significant as it marks the coldest November in the UK since 2010.

Impact of Severe Weather Across Scotland

The freezing conditions led to widespread weather warnings. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice, particularly affecting northern Scotland. Heavy snowfall disrupted daily life, causing more than 100 school closures across the north and north-east regions.

School Closures and Transport Disruptions

  • More than 30 schools in Aberdeenshire were closed.
  • One school in the Highlands also shut down.
  • On Wednesday, dozens of schools faced similar closures due to snow and ice.

Transport was gravely affected as well. Part of the A90 was closed for several hours. In Aberdeenshire, a double-decker bus became stuck on the road from Banchory to Torphins due to snow accumulation.

Snowfall and Skiing Opportunities

Despite the adverse weather conditions, some areas welcomed the snow. The Cairngorm Mountain snowsports centre, located near Aviemore, reported sufficient snowfall to offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities over the upcoming weekend.

Weather forecasts indicate that Friday will mark the end of this cold snap, with milder temperatures anticipated for the weekend. As the region prepares for a transition, it seems this extreme weather, characterized by the lowest temperatures recorded in over a decade, has had a significant impact on both daily activities and outdoor recreational options.
