Kerala Family Climbs Mount Kilimanjaro: Their Inspiring Journey
A family from Kottayam, Kerala, achieved an incredible milestone by summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters above sea level. This remarkable journey was undertaken by Susan Josy Chambannoor, her husband Josy, and their daughters Cherin and Neha, alongside their close friend Satheesh. They embarked on their trek from October 12 to 18, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak, famously known as the roof of Africa.
The Trekking Experience
The family dedicated six days to traverse Africa’s challenging landscape. Their adventure was not just a hike but a result of extensive planning and collaborative effort. They faced numerous obstacles, including rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and the physical strain of climbing a mountain that presented unique challenges for three members over the age of 60.
Overcoming Challenges
- Moisture from rainforests
- Steep, rocky paths
- Bone-chilling cold temperatures
As they neared their goal, exhaustion set in. On their last night of trekking, they began the final ascent at 11 p.m. Temperatures dropped below zero, and they encountered icy patches along the path. The family supported each other, using headlamps to navigate through the harsh conditions.
Achieving the Dream
Upon reaching the summit, the family was greeted by stunning golden sunlight. Susan shared the emotional weight of the moment. Despite feeling fatigued, the sight of her family’s determination reignited her strength. “We became each other’s strength and headed forward, cutting through the chilly weather to conquer the final lap,” she recalled.
The Power of Planning
The journey had been a long-held aspiration. The family’s friend Satheesh played a pivotal role in the planning process, ensuring that logistics were handled so they could focus on physical endurance. They expressed gratitude for the support from Altessa Trekking’s 32-member team, whose professionalism helped ensure a safe and successful climb.
Reflections on the Summit
As the family celebrated their achievement at Uhuru Peak, Susan reflected on the emotional impact of their adventure. The mesmerizing view of the reddish morning sky brought tears to her eyes. “This journey was a reminder that nothing can stop you when you face challenges with the support of your loved ones,” Susan said.
Having returned to India, they hope that their experience will inspire others to confront their own challenges with courage and determination.
