Major Snowfall and Strong Winds Hit Toronto and GTA Tonight

Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are bracing for significant snowfall and strong winds starting Saturday night. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement highlighting the severe weather conditions expected in the region.

Snowfall Forecast and Weather Warnings

The advisory predicts snowfall accumulation between five to ten centimetres from late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Additionally, strong southwest winds may gust between 60 to 70 km/h, complicating travel conditions.

  • Areas affected by the special weather statement include:
    • Toronto
    • Peel Region
    • Halton Region
    • Niagara Region
    • City of Hamilton

Environment Canada warns that local utility outages may occur, as roads and walkways will become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. They noted that if precipitation remains as snow, totals could surpass ten centimetres.

Yellow Warning for York and Durham Regions

York and Durham regions have been placed under a yellow warning for expected snowfall. Areas such as Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, and Ajax are included in this warning.

  • Snowfall amounts in these regions may reach:
    • Near 10 centimetres in York Region
    • 15 to 20 centimetres in higher terrains north of Lake Ontario

Environment Canada states that hazardous weather may lead to damage, disruption, or health impacts. Travel in these areas is likely to be challenging, with reduced visibility and accumulating snow affecting navigation.

The snow is anticipated to taper off by Sunday afternoon for most affected areas, providing some relief. Residents are advised to allow extra time for travel and to stay updated on changing weather conditions.
