Three Injured in San Jose Mall Shooting; Investigation Ongoing
On Friday afternoon, a shooting occurred at the Westfield Valley Fair mall in San Jose, California, injuring three individuals. The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) was dispatched at around 5:40 p.m. and confirmed the incident shortly after 6 p.m.
Key Details of the San Jose Mall Shooting
The shooting took place near the women’s Macy’s on the second floor. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos, with patrons fleeing in panic. “We were just eating dinner at California Pizza Kitchen when a stampede of people came running our way,” reported Tyler Pina, a witness from Morgan Hill. After hearing shots, he sought refuge with a group in a backyard for about 30 minutes.
Injuries and Victims
Initially, police identified two victims at the scene. However, by 8:35 p.m., it was confirmed that three victims were hospitalized. They included:
- A male
- A female
- A 16-year-old girl
All victims suffered gunshot wounds that are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Police Investigation and Community Response
San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph expressed concern over the shooting during a busy shopping period. He assured the community of increased patrols over the weekend while the investigation continued. “I have confidence that the suspect will be brought to justice swiftly,” he stated.
Investigators believe this was an isolated incident stemming from a verbal altercation between the male suspect and one of the victims. The SJPD characterized the incident as gang-related. Two of the injured individuals, a woman and a teenage girl, were reportedly uninvolved bystanders.

Witnesses recounted experiences of confusion and fear. Ruhama Thomas, caught in the melee, noted, “We heard loud bangs and saw glass shatter, prompting us to duck down and then run.” Others expressed how terrifying it was to be separated from friends and family amidst the panic.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan shared his distress over the incident on social media, emphasizing his thoughts were with the victims. Following the incident, police evacuated the mall to ensure there was no ongoing threat and advised the public to stay clear of the area.
The SJPD is encouraging anyone with relevant cellphone video to assist with the investigation. The Westfield Valley Fair mall reopened to the public at noon on Saturday, following safety assessments.
