Sudan Civil War: Dramatic Escape from El-Fasher, Darfur

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has driven many, including Mr. Mohamed and others from El-Fasher in Darfur, into dangerous circumstances. Reports indicate that several individuals have faced deadly encounters while trying to escape the violence.

Survivors’ Accounts from El-Fasher

Two survivors, Mr. Ali and Mr. Adam, recounted harrowing experiences. They witnessed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) open fire on a group of men, leaving many dead. “They killed the men, they didn’t kill the women,” Mr. Ali stated. He described their desperate flight from Gurni on donkeys to the village of Tur’rah.

Upon reaching Tur’rah, Mr. Mohamed was reunited with his daughters. However, many escapees arrived at the next destination, al-Dabbah, with little to nothing in hand as they had to leave their homes amid chaos.

Challenges Faced During Escape

During their escape, many reported significant challenges. Most left with minimal belongings, often having to pay fees to pass through checkpoints. Mr. Adam described how RSF fighters confiscated their possessions, including money and phones. “They stripped us of everything we had,” he lamented.

At each checkpoint, the RSF reportedly required escapees to contact relatives for money transfers to their mobile accounts before permitting them to proceed.

RSF’s Denial of Allegations

The RSF has denied the accusations of systematic abuses against civilians. Dr. Ibrahim Mukhayer, an advisor to RSF leader Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, responded to the claims, stating that the group does not condone looting, killings, or other forms of violence against civilians.

  • Dr. Mukhayer emphasized accountability for any RSF members proven to be responsible for wrongdoing.
  • He suggested that the allegations are part of a politically motivated media campaign against the RSF.

Efforts to Control the Narrative

In response to the negative reports, the RSF has initiated its own communication strategy. They have released videos portraying RSF officers interacting with those fleeing El-Fasher and showcasing humanitarian efforts, including the distribution of aid and the reopening of medical centers.

The situation in Sudan continues to evolve, with many seeking refuge from the ongoing civil war. As events unfold, the plight of civilians remains a pressing concern.
