Eastern Ontario Faces Snowfall Warning and Wind Advisory
Eastern Ontario is bracing for significant weather changes, with Environment Canada issuing a snowfall warning and wind advisory. Local residents should prepare for wintery conditions on Sunday.
Weather Warnings and Regions Affected
The snowfall warning was issued early Sunday morning at around 5 a.m. This alert impacts several areas:
- Belleville
- Barry’s Bay
- Bancroft
- Laurentian Valley
Forecasts predict these regions could see up to 20 centimetres of snow accumulation.
Wind Advisory and Impacts
A special weather statement also exists for Kingston, Belleville, and Greater Napanee. These areas are experiencing strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching up to 80 kilometres per hour. The snow and wind are expected to ease later in the evening, but travel conditions may remain difficult throughout the day.
Predictions for Ottawa
As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Ottawa is not under a snowfall warning. However, the city may still receive around 10 centimetres of snow by day’s end. Residents are advised to stay informed as conditions change.
New Weather Alert System
Environment Canada has upgraded its weather alert system. The new system, influenced by European agencies, aims to provide clearer communication regarding severe weather:
- Yellow: Least severe; issues warnings for hazardous conditions.
- Orange: Indicates storms likely to cause widespread damage.
- Red: The most severe; signifies potentially life-threatening weather.
This new approach is intended to align with the World Meteorological Association’s recommendations, improving overall public awareness and response to severe weather.
