Vikings Release Thielen to Pursue Greater Role in Final Season

The Minnesota Vikings have recently waived wide receiver Adam Thielen, signaling a significant move as he prepares for his final season. This decision came following Thielen’s absence in the team’s 26-0 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, where he was a healthy scratch.

Adam Thielen, a Minnesota native, had two stints with the Vikings, where he established himself as a key player. He ranks third in the franchise’s history with 55 touchdown catches, fourth with 542 receptions, and fifth with 6,751 receiving yards. His connection to the team has been deep-rooted, expressing in his farewell statement that wearing the Vikings uniform meant everything to him.

Final Season Decision

At 35, Thielen confirmed that 2025 would be his last year playing professionally. In his statement, he expressed his desire to find a new team where he could compete during this period of his career. “This team is in my bones. It’s in my heart and it’s part of my DNA. I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking,” he wrote.

The Waiver Decision

Thielen’s agent requested his release from the team the week prior to the announcement. Earlier this season, the Vikings acquired him in a trade with the Carolina Panthers, exchanging a 2026 fifth-round draft pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick for Thielen and additional picks. This agreement was intended to bolster the team temporarily while starting receiver Jordan Addison was suspended for three games.

Despite his initial impact, Thielen saw limited action following Addison’s return. In the 2025 season, he participated in 11 games, recording just eight receptions for 69 yards, including his final game where he played only three snaps at the Green Bay Packers.
