Democrats Launch Congressional Investigation into Kash Patel’s FBI Jet Use

The House Judiciary Committee’s Democrats have initiated an investigation into FBI Director Kash Patel’s use of the agency’s aircraft for personal purposes. This inquiry arises from multiple reports regarding what the committee describes as misuse of the FBI’s Gulfstream jet for various personal trips.

Investigation Overview

Democratic Representatives Jamie Raskin from Maryland and Sydney Kamlager-Dove from California lead the investigation. They have called for Patel to provide travel records, passenger lists, and any related communications regarding his flights.

Key Flights Under Scrutiny

  • Date Night in Pennsylvania: On October 25, Patel allegedly flew to Pennsylvania to attend a performance by his girlfriend, a country singer, at a wrestling match at Pennsylvania State University.
  • Return Trip to Nashville: Following the performance, he reportedly used the FBI jet to return with her to Nashville.
  • Texas Outing: The inquiry also covers a subsequent trip to a ranch in San Angelo, Texas, where Patel was hosted by Republican donor Bubba Saulsbury.

Concerns Over Official Duties

The committee’s letter explicitly questioned the necessity of these trips concerning Patel’s official responsibilities. The representatives emphasized that the FBI’s plane is owned by the U.S. government and funded by taxpayers.

Lack of Subpoena Power

As minority members of the committee, Raskin and Kamlager-Dove cannot compel the FBI to disclose records. Instead, they have requested that records be submitted by December 15.

Regulations on FBI Director Flights

According to executive branch policy, FBI directors must utilize government aircraft for travel, both official and personal. This ensures they maintain secure communication capabilities and rapid access in emergencies. However, directors are responsible for reimbursing the government for personal flight costs, which must be charged at coach fare rates.

Previous Reports

Earlier in May, CBS News revealed potential irregularities in Patel’s use of FBI aircraft, prompting Senate Democrats to request a Government Accountability Office review of his travel practices. Reports also indicated that Patel had traveled to Las Vegas and Nashville for personal reasons, further raising concerns about his adherence to established travel policies.

The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of accountability in the usage of government resources, particularly within high-ranking positions in federal agencies.
