Steelers Sign WR Thielen, Release CB Slay
Pittsburgh’s NFL team recently took significant steps in reshaping its roster. The Steelers claimed veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers and parted ways with cornerback Darius Slay.
Steelers Sign WR Adam Thielen
Adam Thielen, 35, was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings. He is now expected to contribute significantly during what he describes as his final NFL season. In 11 games this year, Thielen recorded eight receptions for 69 yards.
Thielen previously had an impressive performance, logging over 1,000 receiving yards in the 2023 season. He amassed 1,014 yards on 103 receptions while playing for the Carolina Panthers. Over his extensive 12-year career, he has achieved:
- 693 receptions
- 8,380 receiving yards
- 64 touchdowns
Veteran CB Darius Slay Released
Darius Slay, 34, has mutually agreed to part ways with the Steelers after a short stint. He signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the team following his Super Bowl win with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this year.
This season, Slay started nine games in Pittsburgh. He appeared in just a limited capacity in the last matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to inactivity. His performance stats include:
- Three passes defended
- One fumble recovery
- 36 total tackles
- One tackle for loss
In light of Slay’s departure, the Steelers activated cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. from their practice squad. Samuel had been signed on November 11 and observed limited action due to his recovery from spinal fusion surgery.
Performance and Future Opportunities
Against the Bears, Slay managed only 20 defensive snaps after returning from a concussion. With both Slay released and Pierre in concussion protocol, Samuel stepped up with 28 snaps against the Bills, contributing three tackles.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin commented on Samuel’s potential, stating, “We liked some of the things that we saw,” indicating Samuel may have expanded responsibilities moving forward.
As the team prepares to face the Ravens, the adjustments in their lineup could prove crucial for their performance.
