BC Retains O’Brien with Enhanced Financial Commitment

Boston College is committing to an enhanced financial strategy for its football program, retaining head coach Bill O’Brien for a third season. This decision comes as the Eagles reflect on a challenging season, finishing with a disappointing record of 2-10, their worst since 2012.

Commitment to Football Program

Athletic director Blake James made the announcement on Tuesday, emphasizing the school’s commitment to improving its football resources. O’Brien has consistently asserted his capability as the right coach, despite the financial constraints faced by the program this past season.

Financial Enhancements

  • Boston College will maximize its revenue share to align with peer institutions in the Autonomy Four conference.
  • Significant investments will target operational and administrative support for the football team.

Additionally, the school has appointed Kenyatta Watson as general manager to oversee roster management, player recruitment, and program development. Watson, a Boston College alumnus, previously served as assistant GM at Auburn and has a history of successful recruitment at Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Auburn.

New Initiatives and Support

James also announced a substantial $50 million challenge, which will match new endowment gifts on a one-to-one basis. This initiative aims to bolster athletic scholarships and operational costs over the next five to seven years.

Coach O’Brien’s Tenure

Since taking over, Bill O’Brien has compiled a record of 9-16 in two seasons. Last year, the Eagles finished with a 7-6 record and participated in the Pinstripe Bowl.

The future of Boston College football now hinges on these strategic investments and the leadership of coach O’Brien as they aim to improve their performance in the coming seasons.
