December’s Supermoon: Last One Until 2042 Promises Spectacular Sights

As December arrives, skywatchers can look forward to an extraordinary astronomical event. The last full moon of 2025 will occur on the night of December 4 to December 5. This full moon is not just any ordinary full moon; it marks the third consecutive supermoon and is set to shine exceptionally bright and appear larger than usual.

December’s Supermoon: A Rare Celestial Show

Scheduled for 12:15 AM on December 5, the full moon will be approximately 363,932 kilometers from Earth. In contrast, a typical full moon is about 394,000 kilometers away. This proximity will result in the moon being about 15% brighter and 8% larger than usual, offering a breathtaking spectacle for those keen on celestial events.

Viewing Details and Timing

The moon will begin to appear full around sunset on December 4, around 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM. However, the best moment to witness its fullness will be in the early hours of the next day. Although it may not be easy for the naked eye to discern the slight differences in size and brightness, it will still be a worthwhile sight.

Significance of This Event

According to calculations from StarWalk, this will be the highest the moon reaches in the sky until early 2042. The last time a similar height was achieved was in December 2006. While there will be other supermoons before 2042, none will reach the same elevation as this one.

Accompanying Celestial Bodies

On the night of December 4, the moon will not be alone. Observers will also be able to spot several stars and planets nearby:

  • Aldebaran: An orange star located to the lower left of the moon.
  • The Pleiades: This star cluster, known as “the seven sisters,” will be positioned higher to the left of the moon.
  • Betelgeuse: Another bright orange star, found beneath the moon.
  • Jupiter: This planet will appear much lower and to the left of the lunar display.

Mark your calendars for this celestial event that promises to deliver spectacular sights and a memorable experience under the night sky!
