OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Issues ‘Code Red’ Alert on ChatGPT

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has declared a “code red” for the company as it faces intensified competition in the artificial intelligence landscape. The recent internal memo, reported by various outlets including The Information and The Wall Street Journal, highlights the urgency for ChatGPT to enhance its quality to compete effectively with rivals like Google Gemini.

Increased Competition in AI

Google launched its latest AI model, Gemini 3, last month, achieving significant success in benchmark tests. The company heralded this as a milestone, describing it as a “new era of intelligence.” Notably, Gemini 3 set a record score on a challenging evaluation known as Humanity’s Last Exam, developed to assess artificial superintelligence.

Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, expressed his admiration for Gemini 3, stating, “The leap is insane.” His endorsement came after he spent considerable time with the AI, indicating a shift in preference from ChatGPT to Gemini 3.

OpenAI’s Response

In a response to Google’s advancements, Altman congratulated Google publicly, labeling Gemini 3 as a “great model.” However, in the internal memo, he conveyed a different sentiment to OpenAI’s staff, acknowledging that ChatGPT had fallen behind and emphasizing the need for rapid improvement. He reassured employees, stating, “We know we have some work to do, but we are catching up fast.”

Future Directions for ChatGPT

OpenAI remains committed to enhancing ChatGPT’s capabilities. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, addressed the competitive climate, asserting that the product remains the “number one AI assistant worldwide.” He noted that ongoing product launches stimulate innovation and motivate the team to elevate ChatGPT’s capabilities continuously.

Currently, OpenAI is not introducing advertisements to ChatGPT, with plans to test this feature in beta versions of the application. The organization’s focus is on expanding access and ensuring the AI assistant is both intuitive and user-friendly.
