Penn State Targets Big 12 Coach in Ongoing Search
Penn State is currently navigating a challenging coaching search, having identified a new primary target. After Kalani Sitake opted to remain at BYU, the Nittany Lions turned their attention to Matt Campbell, the head coach at Iowa State.
Penn State’s Coaching Search Update
ESPN’s Max Olson reports that there is mutual interest between Campbell and Penn State. The school reached out to Campbell on Wednesday, and he is expected to engage with the Nittany Lions soon. This latest development follows weeks of search activity, where Penn State has explored multiple candidates.
Background on Coaching Changes
Penn State’s tumultuous season saw head coach James Franklin dismissed after three consecutive losses. The team finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, but interim coach Terry Smith helped the Nittany Lions end on a positive note, winning their last three games.
Following Sitake’s decision, several players publicly advocated for Smith, displaying signs that read “hire Terry Smith” during their last home game against Nebraska on November 22. This has sparked discussions within the team and among fans regarding the next head coach.
Recruitment Challenges
The prolonged coaching search has led to difficulties in recruitment, resulting in one of the least impactful National Signing Days for Penn State. On signing day, the Nittany Lions secured only two commitments and were ranked 133rd nationally in recruiting, according to 247Sports.
Matt Campbell’s Coaching Record
Matt Campbell became the head coach at Iowa State in 2016. Under his leadership, the Cyclones have achieved a record of 72-55, including an 8-4 season this year. Campbell previously spent four seasons as the head coach at Toledo before moving to Iowa State.
As Penn State continues its search for a new head coach, Campbell appears to be a promising candidate to lead the program forward.
