Former Clemson assistant coach Billy Napier is set to begin a new chapter in his career. Reports indicate that he is finalizing a five-year contract to become the head coach at James Madison University.

Clemson Assistant’s New Opportunity

Napier’s appointment at James Madison follows his dismissal from the University of Florida on October 19, amidst a challenging fourth season. At Florida, he recorded a lackluster overall record of 22-23.

Coaching Transition

He replaces Bob Chesney, who will take over as UCLA’s head coach starting in 2026. This marks Napier’s return to the Sun Belt Conference, where he previously enjoyed considerable success as the head coach at Louisiana from 2018 to 2021.

Record of Success

  • At Louisiana, Napier amassed a remarkable record of 40-12.
  • He led the team to 10 or more wins in each of his final three seasons.
  • In 2020, Napier’s team claimed a share of the Sun Belt title.
  • In 2021, they won the Sun Belt Conference Championship outright.

Previous Tenure at Clemson

Before his time at Louisiana, Napier was an assistant at Clemson from 2006 to 2010. He served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. His tenure ended when Dabo Swinney brought in Chad Morris ahead of the 2011 season.

In addition to his role as a coach, Napier also contributed as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator during the later years of Tommy Bowden’s leadership.

Career Path

Post-Clemson, Napier held various assistant coaching positions at Colorado State, Alabama, and Arizona State. His journey culminated in his appointment as head coach at Louisiana, where he achieved notable successes before moving to James Madison.

With Napier at the helm, James Madison looks forward to a promising future in college football.
