Masked Numbers to Combat Identity Theft, Unwanted Calls Start January 1
The French telecom regulatory authority, Arcep, has announced significant changes aimed at thwarting identity theft and reducing unwanted calls. Starting January 1, 2026, calls with masked numbers will display as “masked number” on smartphones. This initiative seeks to curb the ongoing nuisance of unsolicited calls that have frustrated many citizens.
New Measures Against Unwanted Calls
The measures, set to roll out in early 2026, mark a noteworthy step in addressing the issue. Often, unsolicited calls originate from false banking advisors or companies offering online training, creating a landscape of confusion for recipients. Arcep’s new approach will allow users to quickly identify calls that are attempting to conceal their origins.
Benefits of the Masked Number Display
The updated display can differentiate between calls that originate as masked due to the caller’s choice and those that cannot be authenticated for technical reasons. This clarity aims to reduce unwanted calls significantly.
- iOS and Android Filtering: Users will have the ability to filter calls from masked numbers.
- Enhanced Protection: Operators can detect number spoofing using caller ID authentication systems.
- Recorded Reports: Arcep has received 18,000 reports of number spoofing via its “J’alerte l’Arcep” platform.
Legislative Changes on the Horizon
In addition to the masked number initiative, new legislation will take effect in the summer of 2026. This law aims to diminish the frequency of unwanted commercial calls. Under the new regulations, businesses must obtain explicit consent before contacting users, ensuring that this consent is freely given and easily revocable. Companies that fail to comply could face substantial penalties.
This dual approach by Arcep focuses on both immediate measures to combat identity theft and long-term strategies to limit unwanted communications. The integration of these new rules promises a safer calling environment for all consumers in France.
