Josh Heupel Dismisses Tennessee Football’s Defensive Coordinator Tim Banks
Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel has officially dismissed defensive coordinator Tim Banks following a disappointing performance in the 2025 season. The decision was announced on December 8, mere months after Banks was recognized as a Broyles Award finalist and extended his contract, earning $2.15 million annually through 2027.
Challenges in the 2025 Season
Despite having one of the most explosive offenses in college football, Tennessee’s defense underperformed. In 2025, the Volunteers allowed at least 30 points in seven out of eight SEC games. This setback led to a national ranking of 92nd in scoring defense, averaging 28.8 points per game, and 116th in pass defense, allowing 248.8 yards per game.
Tim Banks’ Tenure at Tennessee
Tim Banks had a unique relationship with Heupel, serving as his only defensive coordinator since Heupel’s arrival at Tennessee in 2021. Banks experienced both success and challenges during his tenure. In 2024, he led the team to allow the fewest points per game (16.1) since the 1998 national championship season, playing a crucial role in Tennessee reaching the College Football Playoff.
Unexpected Decision from Heupel
This dismissal marks a significant change for Heupel, as it is the first time he has fired an assistant coach in his eight seasons as a head coach. Previous staff adjustments primarily involved assistants leaving for better opportunities, highlighting the seriousness of this decision.
Interim Coaching and Future Plans
Linebackers coach William Inge has been appointed as the interim defensive coordinator. He will lead the team as they prepare to face Illinois in the Music City Bowl on December 30. Inge has previously held defensive coordinator roles at various institutions, including Northern Iowa and Indiana.
Looking Ahead
Heupel expressed gratitude for Banks’ contributions, noting his character and respectability. He stated, “These are tough decisions, but I ultimately felt it was necessary for the future of our program.” The search for a new defensive coordinator who aligns with Tennessee’s standards is now underway.
This change signifies a commitment to improve the team’s defensive performance as Tennessee aims to reclaim its status in college football.
