Colin Allred Exits Senate Race to Pursue House Seat

Colin Allred, a former U.S. Representative, has decided to exit the Senate race and instead pursue a congressional seat in the newly redrawn District 33 in Dallas County. This strategic shift follows indications that U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett would join the Democratic contest for the Senate seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn.

Allred’s Congressional Aspirations

In an exclusive interview with El-Balad, Allred expressed his belief that a prolonged primary campaign would not serve the best interests of the voters. “I’ve made the decision to end my Senate campaign, but I’ve decided to run for the newly drawn 33rd Congressional District,” he stated.

This decision sets up a primary contest with U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson, who succeeded Allred in Congress and currently represents District 32. Johnson, newly endorsed by James Talarico for Senate, criticized Allred’s switch to a congressional race, claiming the district deserves representation from someone present during the tough moments, including the recent redistricting battle.

Redistricting and District Changes

  • District 33 now includes neighborhoods that Allred previously represented.
  • Marc Veasey, a Democrat from Fort Worth, currently represents this district.
  • Veasey is expected to run for the newly configured District 30, held by Crockett.

Community Commitment and Achievements

Allred emphasized that running in District 33 is a continuation of his public service. He highlighted past accomplishments, including efforts to establish a Veterans Administration hospital in Garland and securing $135 million for affordable housing, public transportation, and healthcare.

“It is the community where I was raised, and where we are now raising our two boys. It is my home,” Allred remarked, reflecting on his strong ties to the area.

Political Climate and Future Goals

Allred criticized the current political climate in Congress, believing it to be dysfunctional. He asserted the need for Democrats to effectively respond to Republican strategies that could diminish their representation. “It’s time for us to have all of our best players on the field,” he said.

Having flipped his previous district from red to blue in 2018, Allred conveyed a strong commitment to bipartisanship. He plans to bring a renewed perspective and energy to Congress, asserting that he intends to address ongoing issues and strive for effective governance.

Upcoming Political Landscape

As the political landscape evolves, the upcoming March 3 primaries will feature both Democratic and Republican candidates vying for their respective nominations. The Republican contest includes prominent figures such as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt.

Allred’s focused transition to District 33 marks a significant change in his political trajectory as he seeks to rekindle his congressional influence amidst a shifting electoral environment.
