Background of the Novel
Published posthumously in the 1960s, “The Master and Margarita” is regarded as one of the greatest works of 20th-century literature. The novel has never been adapted into an English film, despite several significant filmmakers expressing interest, including Roman Polanski and Terry Gilliam.
Storyline Overview
The narrative interweaves multiple stories. It takes place in 1930s Moscow, where the devil and his talking cat create chaos amid a corrupt society. Another segment unfolds in Jerusalem during Pontius Pilate’s era. Centered on a struggling writer and his lover, Margarita, the story explores themes of love, artistic freedom, and the clash between good and evil. It promises a darkly comic and imaginative journey that remains profoundly relevant today.
Current Projects and Future Endeavors
Dali and Loh are currently involved in a legal dispute regarding rights over a recent Russian-language adaptation of the novel. Meanwhile, Depp is navigating a comeback after his legal challenges, including allegations from his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Besides “The Master and Margarita,” he is in negotiations to portray Ebenezer Scrooge in a dark adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” and is set to co-star with Penélope Cruz in Lionsgate’s “Day Drinker.”
These upcoming roles will mark Depp’s return to major studio projects since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” in 2018. He is represented by Jack Whigham at Range Media.
