NATO Ally Declares Emergency Over Hundreds of Illegal Balloons

NATO member Lithuania has declared a state of emergency to address security threats posed by Belarus, a close ally of Russia. This decision comes as Vilnius International Airport faced repeated closures due to unauthorized balloon activities linked to smuggling operations.

Emergency Declaration and Airport Closures

The Lithuanian government announced that its airport closed for over 60 hours since October due to these balloon threats. Over 350 flights and around 51,000 passengers have been affected during this period, raising serious concerns across Europe.

Government Response

Prime Minister Inga Ruginien emphasized the urgency of combating what she termed a “Belarusian hybrid attack.” Measures include deploying military forces to patrol the border alongside other enforcement agencies. These efforts grant additional powers to conduct searches and detain individuals involved in these smuggling operations.

  • Duration of airport closures: Over 60 hours since October
  • Flights affected: More than 350
  • Passengers stranded: Approximately 51,000

Investigations and International Reactions

Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovi’ revealed that Lithuanian prosecutors have initiated an investigation into these balloon incidents. He accused Belarus of deliberately facilitating these illegal acts, noting that they represented a hybrid warfare tactic. “I have no information that the Belarusian side is trying to curb the senders of the balloons,” he added.

In reaction, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko dismissed Lithuania’s state of emergency as a “mad scam.” He suggested that Lithuania’s actions are part of a larger “hybrid war” against Belarus and accused the Vilnius government of politicizing the issue. Lukashenko expressed openness to discuss matters if Lithuania seeks a diplomatic resolution.

Future Measures

Lithuania is planning additional steps to fortify its border with Belarus, which may include indefinite closure of border crossings. The situation continues to develop as Lithuania remains vigilant in protecting its airspace and national security.

Both nations now find themselves at a crossroads, highlighting the increasing tensions in the region related to illicit activities and broader geopolitical issues.
