6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Waves Near Northeastern Japan

A significant seismic event struck northeastern Japan when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred off the east coast of Aomori prefecture. This quake, which took place on Friday at 11:44 a.m. local time, was recorded at a depth of 20 kilometers. Fortunately, it triggered only small tsunami waves without causing significant damage.

Details of the Earthquake

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed the earthquake’s occurrence and initially issued a tsunami advisory. This advisory was lifted approximately two hours later. Small tsunami waves were reported in both Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures, however, no serious damage or injuries were recorded.

Recent Seismic Activity

This recent quake follows a more powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook the same area earlier in the week. That earthquake led to:

  • At least 34 reported injuries.
  • Light damage across various locations.
  • A tsunami that reached over 0.6 meters above normal tide levels.

The tsunami was measured in Kuji port, located in Iwate prefecture. Following that earthquake, power outages affected hundreds of homes, but by Tuesday morning, most of the electricity was restored.

Warnings and Preparedness

Officials have cautioned residents about the potential for aftershocks in the coming days. Following the recent seismic activity, there is an increased risk of a magnitude 8 earthquake occurring, along with possible tsunami threats along the northeastern coast of Japan, extending from Chiba to Hokkaido.

The JMA has urged communities in 182 municipalities to review their emergency preparedness measures. They stressed that while caution is recommended, it does not imply the prediction of an imminent major earthquake.

Historical Context

This coastal region is particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. In 2011, a devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami led to nearly 20,000 fatalities and the destruction of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. As a result, the Japanese government continues to promote awareness and preparedness for natural disasters.
