Marathon Triggers Traffic Delays and Restrictions

The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) has announced road closures and traffic delays related to the Honolulu Marathon scheduled for this Sunday. The event is set to commence at 5 a.m., with traffic control measures beginning as early as 12:30 a.m.

Marathon Route and Affected Areas

The marathon’s journey starts on Ala Moana Boulevard, traverses downtown, moves towards Hawaii Kai, and concludes at Kapiolani Park. Road and lane closures will impact various regions, including:

  • Downtown Honolulu
  • Kakaako
  • Ala Moana
  • Waikiki
  • Diamond Head
  • Kahala
  • Aina Haina
  • Niu Valley
  • East Honolulu

Traffic lanes will be progressively reopened as runners clear each area. Tow-away zones will also be enforced from midnight until 5 p.m. on race day.

Safety Measures and Regulations

The HPD has implemented strict safety regulations for the event. Drone usage will be prohibited, following a temporary flight restriction approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. This measure aims to mitigate risks posed by unauthorized drone operations during the marathon.

HPD officers will maintain a significant presence at key locations, including the start and finish lines, and will be stationed along the race route. Major Clifford Ramson from HPD’s Major Events Division emphasized that public safety is the priority. He urged all participants and attendees to heed the instructions from law enforcement and first responders to ensure a secure environment for everyone involved.
