Christmas Tree Farm Thrives with Remarkable Comeback
Every Soul Acres, a Christmas tree farm located in Keezletown, Virginia, has made an impressive recovery since its inception in 2017. Situated just four miles off I-81, the farm features approximately 25,000 thriving trees. Owned and operated by Laura Wolfe and her husband, the farm has experienced significant challenges and lessons over the years.
Challenges in Christmas Tree Farming
Laura Wolfe highlights the unique challenges of growing Christmas trees. The process typically takes about six to ten years from planting to harvest. Unfortunately, like many farmers, they faced setbacks due to adverse weather conditions.
“We can see a 90% loss in seedlings over two consecutive summers. This significantly affects production three to six years later,” Wolfe explains. Such losses have prompted her to adjust her planting strategy over the years.
- Each season, she plants up to 4,000 seedlings.
- Wolfe anticipates potential losses and compensates by planting more trees.
- This approach ensures a consistent supply for customers every year.
The Benefits of Cold Weather
Interestingly, while drought conditions pose challenges, the trees flourish in cold, snowy weather. During winter, the snow helps the trees absorb moisture, enhancing needle retention.
Wolfe emphasizes the delightful experience customers have during the winter months. “The trees covered in snow create a magical atmosphere. It’s like a winter wonderland,” she shares, recalling the joy it brings to visitors.
A Bountiful Season
The current growing season has proven to be exceptionally fruitful. With effective management and adequate moisture throughout the summer, the farm has produced its most abundant crop since it began operations.
Wolfe notes they managed to keep their fields accessible to customers longer than usual this year, allowing everyone to enjoy the harvest. The combination of great weather and careful planning has turned Every Soul Acres into a thriving destination for holiday tree purchases.
