Philip Jerel Schroeder, a beloved member of the Remsen community, passed away at the age of 76 on December 13, 2025. He died at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and dedication.

Obituary of Philip Schroeder

Born on July 30, 1949, in LeMars, Iowa, Phil was the son of Elmer and Hildegarde (Ludwig) Schroeder. He spent his formative years in Remsen and graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s in 1967. Following high school, he served in the 185th Air National Guard and was deployed to Korea.

Upon returning home, he utilized the G.I. Bill to attend college at Westmar in LeMars. Phil married his high school sweetheart, Margie Ruden, on April 17, 1971, at Remsen St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

A Life of Service and Community Engagement

Phil was a dedicated farmer, contributing to the family farm south of Remsen. He was deeply involved in St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, where he served as a finance council member, eucharistic minister, and lector. He supported St. Mary’s Catholic Schools throughout his life.

His affiliations included the Knights of Columbus and the VFW, where he chaired several events, including the Remsen Knights of Columbus Life Skills Training Center and Iowa Special Olympics phone-a-thon.

Passion for Life and Family

Known for his zest for life, Phil made friends easily and loved to engage with new people. He enjoyed boating, traveling, and family gatherings, often sharing his passion for farming with anyone willing to listen. His wonderful sense of humor brought joy to those around him, as he loved playful pranks and witty banter.

Phil is survived by his wife, Margie, and their five children: Brad (Tammie) Schroeder, Angie (Todd) Schmid, Stacey Frerichs, Kristin (Chris) Blake, and Justin (Jennifer) Schroeder. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.

Visitation and Services

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on December 18, from 4 to 7 PM, at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. A parish rosary and vigil prayer service will be held at 5 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on December 19 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, officiated by Father Timothy Pick. Burial and military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s name to St. Mary’s School for a family memorial. Contributions can be sent to 121 E 4th Street, Remsen, IA 51050.

Philip Schroeder will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him. His love for his family and community will continue to inspire those he touched.
