Facebook Messenger’s Desktop App Discontinued
Meta has officially discontinued the desktop app for Facebook Messenger. As of December 15, 2025, users will no longer have access to the native application on Mac and Windows devices. Instead, existing users are directed to the Facebook website to continue using the Messenger service.
Reasons Behind the Discontinuation of Facebook Messenger’s Desktop App
Launched during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Messenger’s desktop app struggled to compete with more robust platforms like Zoom. Key limitations included:
- Inability to support as many video call participants as competitors.
- Absence of screen sharing features.
- Difficulties in sharing URLs easily.
This decline in functionality foreshadowed Meta’s decision to phase out the app. In October 2025, plans for the shutdown were publicly announced.
Transition and Technological Shifts
In 2023, Meta initiated the integration of Messenger back into the main Facebook application. This transition coincided with the introduction of modified technology for the desktop version of Messenger. The app for Mac was reengineered using Catalyst, allowing developers to adapt iPad applications for macOS. However, this technology faced criticism for creating a non-native user experience.
Prior to this change, the Mac app was developed using Electron and then transitioned to React Native. Additionally, the Windows version of Messenger had already shifted to a progressive web app in the previous year. These changes likely contributed to a decrease in user engagement with the standalone app.
User Guidance Post-Discontinuation
As Meta prepares to sunset the Messenger desktop app, users are being informed of crucial steps to retain their chat history. It is recommended that they set up a PIN before transitioning to the web version. Individuals using Messenger without an associated Facebook account will be redirected to Messenger.com, where they can log in without needing to create a Facebook profile.
