GOP Representative Who Supported Trump’s Impeachment in 2021 Won’t Seek Re-Election

Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Republican from Washington, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2026. Newhouse, who was one of the few House Republicans to vote for Donald Trump’s impeachment in 2021, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his home state. He has dedicated over 25 years to public service, including more than a decade in Congress.

Deciding Not to Run Again

Newhouse shared his decision in a statement, emphasizing he has no regrets. “I am grateful to the Washingtonians who put their faith in me,” he said.

Impact on Republican Representation

His departure will leave Rep. David Valadao as potentially the last House Republican who supported Trump’s impeachment, assuming Valadao wins re-election. Newhouse was one of ten Republicans who voted for impeachment.

  • Rep. David Valadao (CA)
  • Liz Cheney (WY)
  • Anthony Gonzalez (OH)
  • Jaime Herrera-Beutler (WA)
  • John Katko (NY)
  • Adam Kinzinger (IL)
  • Peter Meijer (MI)
  • Tom Rice (SC)
  • Fred Upton (MI)

All the other eight representatives have since left Congress.

Past Election Insights

Despite Trump’s attempts to unseat him, Newhouse won re-election in 2024. Trump criticized Newhouse shortly before the election, declaring on his Truth Social platform that Newhouse was a “Weak and Pathetic RINO.” He endorsed Newhouse’s rival, Jerrod Sessler, describing him as a “fantastic Candidate.”

Challenges Faced

Sessler, a Navy veteran, ran an unsuccessful campaign against Newhouse for Washington’s 4th District, with support from the House Freedom Caucus. Newhouse maintained his vote for impeachment would not hinder his relationships within the party.

In previous comments, Newhouse stated, “I worked very closely and successfully with President Trump.” His decision not to seek re-election marks a significant moment for the Republican Party in Washington.
