North America’s Largest Wildlife Overpass Opens for Elk in Douglas County
Construction of North America’s largest wildlife overpass is now complete, providing a safe crossing for elk and pronghorn in Douglas County, Colorado. The Greenland Wildlife Overpass spans Interstate 25 between Larkspur and Monument, effectively linking nearly 40,000 acres of natural habitat on either side of the busy highway.
About the Greenland Wildlife Overpass
The overpass measures 200 feet in width and serves as a vital conduit for wildlife. Kara Van Hoose from Colorado Parks and Wildlife remarked that it allows animals to explore areas that were previously inaccessible. An unobstructed view across the structure helps wildlife navigate safely.
Impact on Wildlife Safety
According to Shoshana Lew, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the overpass is crucial for preserving both animal safety and driver safety. It is part of a larger wildlife crossing system that encompasses approximately 18 miles and includes additional underpasses and fencing. This comprehensive system aims to decrease wildlife-vehicle collisions by an impressive 90 percent.
