Old Dominion University Secures NSA Cybersecurity Validation for AI Programs
Old Dominion University (ODU) has made significant strides in cybersecurity education by becoming the first institution to achieve dual validation from the National Security Agency (NSA) for its cyber and artificial intelligence programs. This validation marks a milestone in preparing students for the complexities of the modern technological landscape, especially where AI meets cybersecurity.
NSA Cybersecurity Validation
This year, the NSA introduced its CyberAI Program of Study validations. ODU emerged as the only university in the U.S. to receive both the AICyber and SecureAI recognitions. The Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity with a Major in Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity received the AICyber validation. Meanwhile, the Master of Science in Cybersecurity with a concentration in AI Security was recognized under the SecureAI program.
Significance of Validation
According to ODU President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., this recognition underscores the university’s commitment to innovation and quality education. “Being the first institution to achieve this is a testament to our faculty and our dedication to meeting the ever-evolving needs of the cybersecurity industry,” he stated.
Commitment to Cybersecurity Education
- Programs validated through 2030.
- ODU is one of only ten institutions in the U.S. recognized as a Center of Academic Excellence by the NSA.
- Recognitions include CAE Cyber Defense, CAE Cyber Operations, and Cyber Research.
As ODU celebrates a decade of cybersecurity education, the university has grown significantly. Launched in 2015, the program started with just 11 students. Now, the School of Cybersecurity enrolls around 1,700 students and has produced over 1,500 graduates.
Innovative Programs and Partnerships
The School of Cybersecurity offers nearly a dozen undergraduate and graduate programs, representing the fastest-growing academic offerings at ODU. The institution has also developed vital partnerships with national agencies and companies, including the NSA and Amazon. These collaborations provide students with internship, research, and certification opportunities essential for success in the field.
Daniel Takabi, director of the School of Cybersecurity, emphasized the program’s role in preparing students for AI integration in various industry sectors. “Our validation reflects our leadership in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge for today’s challenges,” he noted.
This comprehensive approach not only fosters academic excellence but also ensures that ODU graduates lead the way in the critical field of cybersecurity.
