Succotash Restaurant Opens in Historic French Quarter Location
Succotash, a new restaurant, is set to launch in the historic French Quarter. Located at 1041 Dumaine Street, it aims to revitalize a notable space in New Orleans dining. This building has a rich history, previously hosting renowned establishments like Marti’s and Peristyle.
History of the Location
The location has experienced various transformations. It first became notable in 1971 as Marti’s, founded by Martin Shambra and Dr. Larry Hill. This restaurant was a social hub in the French Quarter, frequented by artists and the LGBTQ+ community. The property later transformed into Peristyle, a distinguished restaurant from 1992 to 2009, before it returned as Marti’s in 2013 but closed again in 2015.
About Succotash
Succotash is the first restaurant venture for Chef Kimberly Cochran, known as Chef K. She brings her Southern roots and culinary expertise to the French Quarter. Her menu focuses on elevated comfort food that reflects her upbringing in Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans.
Menu Highlights
- T-bone steak
- Duck, Duck, No Goose: A rice dish topped with duck, featuring an option for foie gras.
- Shrimp and grits
- Poached lobster arancini
- Seasonal kale salad with pear, pork belly, and gorgonzola.
- Succotash: Includes fried okra in its preparation.
Chef K emphasizes that her dishes aim to evoke nostalgia. “I want people to say this tastes like grandma’s but looks different,” she shared.
Aesthetic and Ambiance
Succotash merges modern design with historical charm. The main dining room is adorned in hunter green and accented with gold. Classic elements like tile floors, an Art Deco style, and Italian glass chandeliers create a warm atmosphere. A mural of City Park adds a rich visual history to the dining experience.
Future Plans
Chef K has plans for the second floor of Succotash. Once a vacant space, it will offer a wraparound gallery overlooking Armstrong Park. This area aims to host various events, including weddings and private parties.
Operational Details
Succotash is set to open officially on December 31, 2025. Initially, it will serve dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, with a weekend brunch to follow and potential lunch hours in the future.
Chef K hopes that the local community embraces Succotash. She stated, “If the neighbors are coming, we’re doing something right.” With plans to enrich the cultural tapestry of the French Quarter, Succotash might soon become a staple in local dining.
