Bangladeshi Uprising Leader Osman Hadi Dies in Singapore After Attack

Osman Hadi, a prominent leader in the Bangladeshi student uprising of 2024, passed away on December 18, 2025, in Singapore. He died from injuries sustained during an assassination attempt in Dhaka.

Details of the Attack

On December 12, Hadi was shot in the head while traveling in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw on Culvert Road in the Paltan area of Dhaka. After the attack, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital for further treatment.

Realizing the severity of his condition, medical professionals decided to airlift him to Singapore General Hospital’s Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit on December 15. Despite receiving urgent medical care, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Response from Authorities

Following Hadi’s death, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore issued a statement confirming the tragic news. They are currently coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission to facilitate the repatriation of his body to Dhaka.

Who Was Osman Hadi?

Osman Hadi, a member of the opposition group Inqilab Mancha, had gained notoriety for his role in the student protests seeking to dismantle the ruling Awami League party. The group emerged as a significant force during a national uprising in July 2024, leading to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power.

At the time of his assassination attempt, Hadi was campaigning as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency for the upcoming election in February 2026.

Inqilab Mancha and its Opposition to the Government

Inqilab Mancha has faced significant challenges under the Yunus government. The party was disbanded, preventing it from participating in national elections despite its crucial role in the protests. Hadi’s leadership and activism had made him a target, highlighting the increasing tensions in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
