Sony Acquires Peanuts Brand in $457 Million Deal
Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced a significant deal to acquire WildBrain’s 41% stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC. The total value of this acquisition amounts to approximately $457 million (CAN$630 million). This deal, expected to finalize soon, will elevate Sony’s ownership of Peanuts Holdings to 80%. Currently, the Schulz family retains a 20% stake in the company.
Sony’s Commitment to the Peanuts Franchise
Following this acquisition, the rights and management of the Peanuts brand will continue under Peanuts Worldwide, a fully owned subsidiary of Peanuts Holdings LLC. Sony Music will lead the management efforts in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Shunsuke Muramatsu, President and Group CEO of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), expressed enthusiasm about the new ownership. He emphasized Sony’s commitment to honoring Charles Schulz’s legacy and expanding the Peanuts brand globally. Muramatsu stated, “With this additional stake, we look forward to enhancing the value of Peanuts by leveraging the Sony Group’s vast network.”

Peanuts, created by Charles Schulz, first debuted as a comic strip on October 2, 1950. It has since become a celebrated aspect of global pop culture, appearing across various media, including television specials, merchandise, and digital platforms.
WildBrain’s Role and Future Plans
Before this acquisition, WildBrain had held majority rights to the Peanuts brand since acquiring it in 2017 for $345 million. Following the transaction, they will continue as the exclusive licensing agent for consumer products in Europe, the Middle East, China, and Asia Pacific, excluding Japan. WildBrain will also maintain its role as the production studio for new Peanuts content, supported by an ongoing partnership with Apple TV, which has seen an increase in Peanuts content since signing a rights agreement in 2020.
