Hockey and Science Propel Student to a Thriving Research Community
Essix Moser’s journey at Kennesaw State University (KSU) illustrates how the worlds of sports and academic research can converge. From a passion for hockey to a deep interest in neuroscience, Moser has become an integral part of the KSU community.
Background and Academic Focus
Originally from California, Moser moved to Georgia in 2021. He transferred to KSU with the dream of excelling in both his studies and hockey, despite facing challenges. Initially focused entirely on academics, a chance encounter on campus changed his trajectory.
Joining the Hockey Community
Moser’s involvement with KSU’s ice and roller hockey teams began unexpectedly. His roommate introduced him to team members, leading him to join both clubs. Since then, he has competed at regional and national levels.
Academic Growth
Balancing athletics with rigorous coursework, Moser pursued a degree in biology. His summer 2024 experience as a research assistant in a biochemistry lab opened doors to neuroscience, a field he was drawn to due to his own experiences with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Research Contributions
- Moser worked in Professor Martin Hudson’s neuroscience laboratory.
- The lab focuses on using microscopic worms called nematodes to study neurological development.
- Moser contributed to groundbreaking research on transcription factor regulation in neurodevelopmental disorders.
Future Aspirations
Moser’s research ambitions include developing therapies for neurological disorders, and his work has the potential for publication in peer-reviewed journals. He has presented at various conferences, including the KSU Symposium of Student Scholars and the Society for Neuroscience conference.
Impact of Kennesaw State University
Moser credits KSU with providing not just an education, but also a community that fostered his personal and academic growth. He expresses gratitude for the confidence the university has instilled in him as he prepares for graduate study.
Next Steps
As he approaches graduation in December 2025, Moser has applied to doctoral programs in neuroscience. His experiences at KSU have shaped his ambitions and equipped him with the skills needed for success in graduate studies.
