Second-Round NBA Pick Joins Baylor Basketball Team
James Nnaji, a former NBA second-round pick, is set to join the Baylor Bears basketball team. This news was announced by Jonathan Givony of NBA Draft Express on Wednesday. Nnaji’s eligibility comes amid recent NCAA decisions to permit various former G League players to participate in college basketball.
Background on James Nnaji
Nnaji was drafted as the 31st overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Shortly after, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets and later, in 2024, his rights were traded to the New York Knicks. Although Nnaji has played in NBA summer league games for both teams, he has yet to step onto the court in a regular NBA game.
College Basketball Transition
At just 21 years old, Nnaji is transitioning back to college basketball, joining a Baylor team that currently holds a 9-2 record. The Bears are well-positioned in the Big 12 and have a history of competing in the NCAA tournament.
Coaching Perspective
Baylor head coach Scott Drew expressed enthusiasm about Nnaji joining the program. “James is a really talented young player with a ton of potential,” he stated. Drew emphasized that bringing in a player midseason presents challenges but is confident that Nnaji will adapt quickly.
Nnaji’s Basketball Journey
A native of Makurdi, Nigeria, Nnaji relocated to Hungary during his teenage years to pursue professional basketball. He has played for Rátgéber Akadémia in the Hungarian League and FC Barcelona. Nnaji stands at an impressive 7 feet tall, making him a valuable asset for the Bears.
Future Games
Nnaji will be eligible to play immediately and has four years of college eligibility remaining. Baylor’s next game will be against Arlington Baptist on December 29. The team also has upcoming matchups against TCU, Iowa State, and Houston.
