According to the Hawaii Island Police Department, the crash occurred near mile marker 13 on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. A Tacoma truck, traveling eastbound, reportedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Mazda convertible.

- The driver of the Mazda was found unresponsive at the scene.
- She was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:59 p.m.
