Wilmington International Airport (ILM) is celebrating significant changes following the introduction of its first commercial international flight to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This marks a milestone for Avelo Airlines, which began flying from ILM in June 2022.

New International Flight Launch

The celebration included local festivities, such as waving Dominican flags and a ceremonial spray down by a fire truck. According to Avelo’s Communications Manager Courtney Goff, launching such routes is a unique approach that sets Avelo apart from other airlines.

Avelo’s Unique Approach

  • Service Areas: Avelo operates routes to locations less frequented by other airlines, such as New Haven, Connecticut, providing travelers with alternative options to New York City.
  • Flight Schedule: The airline does not offer daily flights, and many are seasonal.
  • Cost Strategy: Avelo focuses on letting customers choose their services rather than bundling them, which helps keep ticket prices down.

Over the past three years, Avelo has successfully conducted over 5,000 flights and plans to expand its offerings to 15 non-stop routes by 2025.

Competitive Landscape

Avelo faces competition from Breeze Airways, which has begun operating in some of the same markets. Goff acknowledged the increased competition, stating the airline is adjusting its network to accommodate the presence of multiple carriers.

Community Response and Challenges

Amid the excitement, Avelo has faced criticism from protestors over its contracts with the Department of Homeland Security. Goff emphasized the airline’s commitment to serving various branches of the government and clarified that such contracts are standard in the industry.

Future Growth Plans

Looking toward 2026, Avelo is planning significant changes. The airline recently announced an order for 50 new Ember Air 195-E2 aircraft. These planes will enhance operational efficiency with a two-by-two seating arrangement, eliminating middle seats and allowing for a broader network expansion.

ILM Director Jeff Bourk expressed optimism about Avelo’s growth and its benefits for local travelers. He noted the positive partnership between the airport and the airline, which is contributing to the regional economy.

Job Creation at Avelo

Goff shared insights on the airline’s job creation efforts in Wilmington. Initially hiring 20 to 30 staff members, Avelo’s workforce has grown to nearly 50, with ongoing recruitment to fill roles such as pilots, flight attendants, and customer support.

This expansion not only increases service options for travelers but also strengthens the local community through job opportunities.
